About Me
Translation
Translation is one of my main passions in life, and it has been ever since I was young. It's incredibly fulfilling to me to navigate translation difficulties and craft translations that both maintain fidelity to the original and read beautifully and naturally in the target language. The "word-for-word vs. sense-for-sense" debate will always remain tricky to navigate and highly dependent on the type and situation of the translation, but my general approach can be summarized by the following quote:"As accurately as possible, as freely as necessary."
---Yoko Hasegawa, linguistI have translated several different genres and types of media, including the 100 page novella "Utakata" by Yoshimoto Banana, which I translated into English and analyzed for my MA thesis, "The Fleeting Story: Bringing Yoshimoto Banana's 'Utakata' into the Spotlight."I also have a YouTube channel where I translate and subtitle Japanese songs. Song translation is surprisingly different from literary translation, not only in that song lyrics are often vague and difficult to parse, but also in that you're constrained by things such as sentence length and flow! More about subtitling and video creation can be read on my other pages. An example of my work with song translation can be seen below:
My particular areas of focus are literary translation and song translation, but I'm of course more than happy to work with any type of media! Please reach out to me if you have anything
you are interested in having translated!
Video Editing
I am also highly skilled when it comes to 2D motion graphics and video creation. Oftentimes, a song I wish to translate does not have a preexisting music video I can append subtitles to. In these cases, I create my own music video, making use of 2D media and motion graphics to create beautiful animations that are thematically appropriate for the song in question. An example of my work with motion graphics can be seen below. I both translated this song as well as created a visually intricate music video for it.
SubtitlingA subset of video creation as a whole, adding subtitles to existing works of media (such as songs that do have music videos) is also something I frequently encounter. When a video already contains lots of text or other visual elements, it can be a challenge to design subtitles that look nice and are easy to read.Making sure subtitles fit well with the piece of media being translated is of great importance to me. My goal is to create subtitles that enhance the work they are being appended to, rather than detracting or distracting from it. I'm passionate about mimicking the style, transitions, and motion of the original as closely as possible, even down to the smallest details. An example of my subtitling work can be seen below. Not only did I translate this song, but I strove to integrate my subtitles as closely as possible with the original text shown in the music video.
Please reach out to me if you are interested in having me create or subtitle an original video for you!

About Me
Hello, I'm Adia (エイディア), A.K.A Aoshika! I'm a US-based translator that specializes in Japanese-to-English translation.I have a BA and an MA in Japanese Language & Literature, as well as a certificate in Translation & Interpretation, all from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
My full resume can be accessed here.My interest in Japanese language began when I started listening to Japanese music as a child. I've always loved music, and I so desperately wanted to be able to understand the lyrics of my favorite songs. I spent hours upon hours struggling with Google Translate, trying to hand-write kanji and hiragana that I couldn't even read, but I was obviously never able to get anywhere! Now, many years later, I'm so happy to finally be able to make my childhood dreams of translating come true! I love translation and see it as a marriage of two of my passions --
language-learning and creative writing. In my spare time, I also enjoy writing, drawing, listening to music, bicycling in nature, and working on a number of personal projects.
